Somerville - Tyabb Tooradin Road - Motorcycle Safety Levy
- Project typeRoads, Streetscapes and Footpaths
- Project value$122,380
- Completion Date31 October 2026
Overview
The objective of this project is to improve motorcyclist safety on this section of Tyabb-Tooradin Road between South Boundary Road East and Bungower Road which is ~850m. This section has been identified as a dangerous site for motorcyclists due to the following factors:
- Roadside hazards: Lack of underrun on existing safety barriers increase the severity of run-off-road events for errant motorcyclists due to the risk of motorcyclists sliding into the posts. The end terminals of existing barriers are also a legacy product which presents a spearing hazard for passenger vehicles.
- Signage: Unexpected changes in the alignment at a curve and a bridge crossing Watson Creek, exacerbated with the minimal delineation and prior warning. The existing CAMs are in poor condition and do not appear to have been installed at the correct location and spacing as required in AS1742.2, reducing their effectiveness at guiding motorists through the curve
- Gravel: on the roadway at the intersection with South Boundary Road East, increasing the potential for motorcyclists to lose control
Proposed treatments
To address these issues, the following treatments are proposed:
- Install rub-rail protection to existing road safety barriers
- Replace the existing CAMs with new CAMs with appropriate spacing
- Install bellmouth seals on South Boundary Road East on both approaches to the intersection with Tyabb-Tooradin Road
- Install Audio Tactile Centre Linemarking (ATCL).
