The Wildlife Sanctuary

The Sanctuary is open 9.00am - 4.30pm every day except Christmas Day, days of Total Fire Ban and days when a severe weather warning is issued. Closures are listed on The Briars web page, our Instagram and Facebook accounts.

Sanctuary animal

The Wildlife Sanctuary is an ark – a place which nurtures, protects and celebrates the unique flora and fauna of the peninsula, now rare but not lost. You may encounter animals including koalas, emus, kangaroos and echidnas. Into the future, animals and plants which are currently locally extinct will be re-introduced here – brought back to their home on the peninsula.

Many Australian animals sleep during the day so they may be hard to see. Ask our team about our After-dark Wildlife Walks – the best time to see Aussie nocturnal animals!

Safety in the Sanctuary

  • Stay on the paths to avoid disturbing wildlife (including snakes, who will leave you alone if you give them space).

  • On days of strong winds, especially following heavy rain, the Sanctuary may close for visitor safety.
