There are many things around your house and garage that are free to dispose of at the tip – probably more than you think. The list includes whitegoods, metals, mattresses and more.

It’s important to sort your load before arrival so the gatehouse staff can identify all free items.

  • Batteries (car, household, mobile phone – domestic quantities)
  • BBQs (remove gas bottle)
  • Bicycles
  • Cardboard
  • Computers and computer accessories
  • Dishwashers
  • Electrical tools (domestic quantities)
  • Engine/motor oil
  • Fire extinguishers (maximum five per customer)
  • Freezers
  • Fridges/refrigerators (domestic)
  • Gas cylinders
  • Glass (domestic quantities)
  • Hair styling tools, electrical (blow dryer, curling irons etc)
  • Hard plastic containers, plant pots, tubs
  • Hot water services
  • Kettles
  • Light globes and fluorescent tubes (domestic quantities)
  • Mattresses, bed bases, all sizes (maximum four per customer)
  • Metals

The problem with nature strip freebies (and what to do instead)

Placing unwanted items on the nature strip, although common, is illegal. If you have items to give away for free, place them within your property’s boundary, or better yet – list them on sites such as Facebook Marketplace, notice boards or Gumtree and they’ll be gone in a flash.

When residents place things on the nature strip, we often see other people adding rubbish or their own unwanted things to that pile. That means they’re offloading their problems to you. Don’t risk a fine, list your items online instead.
