Food and green waste

We offer three different food and green (garden) waste services:

  • Green waste disposal at our Resource Recovery centres. We offer 4 'no charge/free' green waste weekend events per year. (Friday-Sunday).  The next one is Friday 22 - Sunday 24 May.
  • Food and green waste kerbside bin collection. See more information below.

Order a food and green waste bin

Food and green waste bins (240L) can be ordered if you live within the urban area of the Peninsula.  Further information, including terms and conditions are available on our Order a new or larger bin page.

If the property is owned by a company and if you are not listed as a director, you must complete a company authority form before placing your order.

To determine if your property is within the urban area please check the Urban Growth Boundary.

Schools and ELCs need to follow a slightly different process which is outlined on the page above.

What goes in my food and green waste bin?

Why can’t pet waste go into the green waste bin?

Although animal waste is compostable, we have strict standards on compost. To assist the commercial composters to meet this standard and hence be able to sell on the compost, they have requested no animal waste.

Why can’t oyster shells go in the bin?

They are too brittle and take a long time to break down.

Do I have to remove the sticker/label on my fruit and veg?

Yes, the stickers do not compost.

Kitchen caddy and liners

Caddy

A kitchen caddy is a small, lidded container used for storing and transporting of food scraps.  It makes it easier to collect your food scraps as you prepare food in the kitchen.

Use your own caddy or container (any container with a lid will work) to collect and carry your food waste from the kitchen to the food and green bin.

Or, order a complementary kitchen caddy to get you started. All caddies come with certified compostable liners and information as to what can go into the food and green waste bin.

 Order your caddy

Caddy liner

If you do not want a Shire caddy and wish to use liners, a roll of certified compostable liners, enough for 6 months, can be collected from the Mornington, Hastings or Rosebud office and the local connection points at no extra charge. One roll every 6 months is provided and proof of residency is required.

Only residents with a food and green waste bin are eligible.

Do I have to use liners?

No. Caddies can be used without liners, simply empty straight into your food and green waste bin. Or wrap your food waste in newspaper or paper towel.

Can I use other liners?

No, only the liners available from the Shire are certified for use in the green waste bins.

When is my food and green waste bin collected?

Bins will be collected from properties fortnightly (on the opposite week to your recycling).

Find your next collection at My Neighbourhood. Download your bin calendar at Find My Bin Day.

Your food and green waste bin will be collected on all public holidays that fall on the Monday to Friday schedule, including Good Friday and Christmas Day.

Bins should be placed on the nature strip with the wheels facing your property the night before your collection day.

How is my food and green waste composted?

Our food and garden waste will be taken to a commercial composting facility in Dandenong South, where it goes through several steps to composting:

Step 1: Contaminates are removed by hand;

Step 2: The materials are screened, and the smaller pieces are separated from the larger ones. The larger pieces are shredded to reduce their size;

Step 3: It is transported to Gippsland where it is sealed in an in-vessel system and composted over 10-14 days in controlled conditions (temperatures up to 60 degrees, water/moisture and air). Weeds, seeds, harmful bacteria and pathogens are destroyed in this process.  The compost is then moved into open rows to finish the composting process (maturation).

Step 4: The compost is screened again into 2 grades: one coarser and one finer.

My bin wasn't picked up, why?

If you have put your bins out the night before the collection day and they were not collected (and there's no bin tag or tape on it), please contact us within 2 business days after your collection day by calling 1300 850 600.

Our new trucks have a slower lift which closes the lid after releasing the bin. If you suspect the bin hasn't been emptied, please lift the lid to check before reporting.

What do I do if my bin is damaged, stolen or lost?

Check out our page Lost, damaged and stolen bins to find out what you can do.

FAQ for food and green waste

Why is council doing this?

Food waste makes up about 45% of our rubbish bins. When placed in the rubbish bin, it is landfilled where methane, a green house gas 25 times stronger than carbon dioxide, is created.

The Beyond Zero Waste Strategy 2030 aims to send no waste directly to landfill by 2030. Food waste collection is part of a broad range of actions to meet this target.

Council adopted the Beyond Zero Waste Strategy 2030 on 25 August 2020.

Won’t my food and green bin smell?

Just like in your garbage bin, food waste odours will naturally increase during the warmer months.  However, there are various ways to reduce the smell.

  • Put food waste in a compostable bag or wrapped in newspaper.  Try alternating with layers of food waste and garden waste like lawn clippings or dry leaves

  • Wrap up food waste like prawn shells, seafood and uncooked meat scraps and store them in the freezer until closer to collection day

  • Store your bins in a shady, flat and well-ventilated area

  • Rinse your bins from time-to-time, and always keep the lid closed

  • Sprinkle some bicarb soda in the bin to neutralize odours

Will my bin collection change?

No, the schedule will remain the same. Recycling and food and green waste will be collected fortnightly on alternating weeks, and rubbish weekly.

I am a tenant and would like to apply for a kitchen caddy. How do I do this?

If you have a food and green waste bin, you can use the online form above to apply for a caddy.

Will all residents be given a food and green waste bin?

No. Food waste collection will be introduced in two stages.

The first stage is only for residents with a food and green waste bin.

The second stage will commence in 2024 with a review of stage 1. If contamination rates are low, residents will be asked if all households should receive a green waste bin, potential costs and if the food and garden collection should change to a weekly collection.

What if I already compost at home?

That’s excellent! Thank you for doing this – please keep up the great work.

The home compost can only accept limited items, all other food scraps can go into the green waste bin. E.g. meats, dairy and breads.

The food and garden waste bin can actually complement backyard composting by helping you to divert non-compostable material away from landfill and making sure none of this valuable resource goes to waste.

I have a Garden Waste Bin but it is already full of garden waste – there is no room for food scraps

Thank you for using your garden waste bin for garden waste and keeping this material out of landfill!

Food waste is often heavier than garden waste so you may find bagged food waste condenses the other contents, making room.  To maximise space in your bin, you can layer your food waste with garden waste.

To make sure you can also divert your food scraps away from landfill, consider establishing a backyard compost bin for some of your excess garden materials and food waste in addition to utilising your garden waste bin.

We have rebates for home composts here

If you find you have an excess of garden and food waste materials, you can order an additional food and garden waste bin. Details of the bin options and costs are available on the Bin Options and Charges page

How do you know this will work?

Food waste recycling is not new.  Many Councils around Australia and internationally provide this service to cut down the waste they send to landfill.

It is a proven system to reduce the impact of waste on our environment.

Schools and ELCs

From July 1 2022, schools and early learning centres can apply for the food and green waste kerbside service for their educational facility. This is to enable schools and ELCS to continue their food waste diversion programs and to reduce their food waste to landfill.

We have rebates for compost and worm farm discounts for schools and ELCs which can assist you to set up a food waste diversion program which is needed before you apply for a kerbside service.
