Rats and Mice

Rodents such as rats and mice are a common problem. Typically, they will not inhabit an area unless there is a food source available. Rodents can usually be found in instances of poorly maintained chicken pens, bird aviaries, compost piles, defective rubbish bins and fallen fruit.

Rodents are most likely to invade human habitation when surrounding paddocks or grasslands are harvested or when the natural seed food source runs out in autumn. The colder months also drive them indoors for shelter and warmth.

Here are some tips on what to do in the instance of a rodent problem:

If you have a rodent problem on your property, you can either treat the problem yourself using rat or mouse traps or engage the services of a professional pest control company. For further information on pest control, see the Department of Health's rodent pest control page.

If you see a rodent problem on Shire-managed land such as parks or reserves, please report the issue.
