Shire adopts Onsite Wastewater Management Plan 2024 – 2029
Published on 20 May 2025
Mornington Peninsula Shire has adopted the Onsite Wastewater Management Plan 2024 – 2029, ensuring wastewater generated within the Shire is managed effectively to protect public health and the environment.
Onsite wastewater disposal is a critical environmental issue, particularly on the Peninsula, which has the highest number of wastewater (septic tank) systems of any Victorian council – more than 22,000 residential and commercial properties rely on them.
If not properly maintained, wastewater systems can discharge bacteria and contaminants into groundwater and surface waters, impacting our natural environment and community health.
The newly adopted Plan sets out key actions to:
- Prevent wastewater from discharging beyond property boundaries.
- Minimise individual and cumulative impacts on groundwater and surface water.
- Safeguard public health.
The Plan is updated every five years, with the last version adopted in 2018. Community consultation played a key role in shaping this Plan, ensuring it meets the needs of residents and businesses across the Peninsula.
