About Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels is a name familiar to Australians and is at the heart of many communities. The Shire's Meals on Wheels program provides 1600 nourishing meals per week for 470 people, an incredible 83,000 meals per year. The first Meals on Wheels was delivered over 65 years ago and has since become more than 'just a meal'. Meals on Wheels has been operating on the Mornington Peninsula, for over 50 years.

How does Meals on Wheels help the community?

Good nutrition plays a key part in overall health and wellbeing. Every meal is prepared according to the National Meal Guidelines, meeting the daily nutritional needs of older Australians. The Shire’s Meals on Wheels Kitchen Staff in Rosebud, prepare all meals which are delivered by volunteers to clients each weekday morning.

Meals on Wheels helps reduce the social isolation risk for many older Shire residents. Volunteers help strengthen communities by making a real difference to the lives of the clients they deliver to, and by bringing a smile to the face of clients. Volunteer checks also bring families peace of mind, knowing that a friendly volunteer is checking on their loved one each day.

Why should you volunteer for the Shire’s Meals on Wheels service?

Volunteers are the backbone of the Meals on Wheels service. Volunteers help ensure the community's most vulnerable maintain nourishment through healthy meals and stay connected to their community.

Through meaningful interactions, volunteers often form lifelong friendships with customers and fellow volunteers. Studies have shown that those who volunteer live longer, happier, and more productive lives.
