Tyabb Landfill has been closed for nearly 30 years and was in operation between 1988 and 1995 replacing waste disposal operations that were formerly occurring at the Crib Point landfill. Historically the site allowed for landfilling of wastes including putrescible waste, solid inert waste, asbestos waste of domestic origin, and shredded pneumatic automotive tyres. The site is regulated as a closed landfill under the Environmental Protection Act 2017. A recent Post Closure Pollution Abatement Notice has been issued by the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) which specifies the measures Council must do to manage the landfill.

The current stormwater at Tyabb Landfill is ponding on the cap and against the batters. Rehabilitation works are required to re-grade the access road and the eastern cap area and extracting leachate from waste and from the leachate pond.

The detailed design for the project has been completed and verified by the appointed auditor. However, submission to the EPA has been temporarily paused, as a new design approach was identified during the course of the project. This alternative focuses on enhanced maintenance strategies rather than full-scale rehabilitation and is currently being reviewed in consultation with the design team.

The aim is to progress to construction in the 25/26 Financial Year.
