Beach cleaning

On 20 May 2025, Council resolved to return to mechanical raking for all accessible beaches and to continue hand cleaning for the remaining Port Phillip sites, using an outsourced delivery model. Council also committed to exploring improved methods and emerging technologies for mechanical beach cleaning in the future.

This decision applies to approximately 32 kilometres of the Mornington Peninsula’s 192-kilometre coastline. A copy of the 20 May Council Meeting Minutes are available here: Council/Committee Meeting Agendas and Minutes - Mornington Peninsula Shire

In response, we are now working with our beach cleaning service provider to reintroduce mechanical raking to all accessible Port Phillip beaches as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The Hand Beach Cleaning Trial has provided valuable insights into the dynamic nature of our coastline and the challenges of managing litter and seaweed across different beach environments. It also prompted a wide range of community feedback, which we greatly appreciate.

We take this opportunity to sincerely thank all community members and volunteers who continue to support our coast, whether through Beach Patrol, Friends Groups, or other local initiatives. Your contribution is vital and highly valued.

What’s next

We are actively working with our beach cleaning service provider to reinstate mechanical raking to all accessible Port Phillip beaches as soon as possible. In the meantime, hand cleaning will continue at all Port Phillip beaches.

This webpage will be updated as further details become available.
