Nature vs Stuff

Nature vs Stuff

NATURE vs STUFF is an immersive audio-visual experience. Betty’s unique hyper-pop visual style shines through the installation’s video art and light sculptures. The discordant aesthetics highlight the environmental impacts of consumerism.

NATURE vs STUFF is the result of 4 years of creative research and international field trips. The installation features Betty’s video footage, microscope imagery and photographic imagery from crucial global ecosystems, her field and hydrophone recordings and audio composition, her typographic statements and her digital graphic design.

Betty’s microscope imagery presents the micro on a macro scale. This allows audiences to experience aspects of nature that are imperceptible without the use of scientific and digital equipment. These intricate visual elements are layered within cinematic landscape imagery and bold typographic statements.

The over-saturated, layered visual information together with the audio soundscape inhabit the senses, providing a unique contemporary snapshot, one that highlights a lack of connection between most humans the natural environment they inhabit. Betty uses the mediums of light and sound to invite audiences to form deeper connections with their surrounding natural world.

NATURE vs STUFF combines audio-visuals collected while Betty was in Amazonia (Brazil), Batticaloa (Sri Lanka), Gamboa (Panama), Karachi (Pakistan) and on Kulin Nations lands (Australia). She came to these landscapes with presence and intention and pays respect to the cultures, lives and struggles of these lands and their peoples. In making and presenting this artwork, Betty gratefully acknowledges First People’s custodianship and connection to landscape.
