Rye: Landfill Cell 2 Capping
- Project typeOpen Spaces and Reserves
- Project value$19 Million
An Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) compliant and approved landfill cap, at the Rye Landfill, must be installed and approved by the Mornington Peninsula Shire within 2 years of the landfill site being closed. The installation of this landfill cap is requirement under the EPA Victoria licence that Council operates the landfill under. This cap will protect the environment and community at the end of the landfill’s life cycle. The Rye Landfill is expected to be full and closed by mid-2025, 6 months ahead of the initial estimates and expectations.
Phase 1
EPA approved land capping engineers and environmental specialists are in the process of completing a design to cap the Rye landfill. This will be reviewed and approved by the EPA prior to the next phase of the project commencing.
Phase 2
Engagement of a land fill capping experienced contractor will be undertaken. This successful contractor will complete the approved capping works detailed within the approved design from phase 1 of the project.
Status:
- The EPA design auditor has reviewed the draft design and provided feedback to the project design team.
- The draft design was submitted to the Council but requires minor modifications due to constructability issues. Council are currently seeking feedback from the EPA regarding the cap design and what appears to be an opportunity to extend the life of the current landfill cell through design optimisation.
