Background

The Federal Black Spot Program has approved $191,100 in funding to complete road safety upgrades on Colchester Road in Capel Sound between Newington Avenue and Jennings Court.

Within the project section of Colchester Road, three crashes have been recorded during the five-year period between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2023. These comprised two serious injury crashes and one ‘other’ injury crash. Excessive operating speeds have been identified as a driving factor behind the crash history at the site.

To improve road safety along the route, it is proposed to install a raised intersection at Colchester Road and Newington Avenue, as well as a skid-resistant surface treatment at the bend between Colchester Road and Jennings Court. The proposed treatments will reduce the likelihood and severity of historical crash types along this section of Colchester Road by restricting vehicle speeds, while also improving overall road user safety.

The project is currently being constructed.

Scope of work includes:

A raised intersection at Colchester Road and Newington Avenue intersection.
Skid-resistant surface treatment at the bend between Colchester Road and Jennings Court.
