Composting is a natural process that can be harnessed in your own backyard to reduce food waste going to landfill.

  • Each year in Victoria, over 250,000 tonnes of avoidable food waste goes to landfill.
  • On the Peninsula, food waste makes up 40% of household rubbish.

Composting:

  • reduces the amount of waste going to landfill 
  • diverts food waste from landfill, reducing the amount of greenhouse gas produced
  • improves the soil of our gardens, allowing us to grow even more veggies
  • supports our farmers by not throwing out the water, soil nutrients, time and labour that has gone into growing, harvesting, processing, packaging and distributing food to our kitchens

Compost Rebates

Compost rebates help Shire residents to obtain discounted compost bins, worm farms or bokashi systems to encourage composting and reduce food waste going to landfill. Households, child centres and schools are eligible for the rebates.

How much is the discount?

$50 off the member discounted prices. Visit Compost Community for a full list of products and their prices after the discount.

How will I receive my composting units?

Your selected product will be posted to you. Please allow 2 weeks for delivery.

Terms and Conditions

  1. The Peninsula Compost Challenge is only available to residents of the Mornington Peninsula, or schools and child care centres located on the Peninsula. The compost system must be installed at the residential/school/ child centre address listed
  2. The rebate is limited to 1 per residential address, or 3 per school or child centre. 
  3. Multiple rebates cannot be used for the same product. 
  4. The applicant must be the occupier of the property requesting the rebate or work at the school or child centre.
  5. The composting system must be used for domestic purposes only and not for re-sale. 
  6. The rebate is only eligible on council approved items through Composting Community.
  7. The Shire is not responsible for the quality of the compost equipment. Any issues must be directed to Composting Community
  8. Only limited quantities of rebates are available. The Mornington Peninsula Shire Council reserves the right to withdraw the rebates once all quantities have been exhausted.
