Mornington Peninsula Shire is responsible for maintaining 56 different sports fields across its Open Space unit.

There are various activities that occur on Shires Sports fields, like AFL, Soccer, Cricket, Baseball, School sport days etc.

Maintenance activities undertaken to help provide the best sporting surfaces possible include:

  • Regular mowing helps to keep the surfaces fit for play and helps promote a healthy grass cover. Depending on the type of grass surface and the time of the year will alter the mowing frequency.
  • Natural turf surfaces are maintained as best as is possible to be weed and pest free and fertilisers are consistently applied to keep the grass as healthy as possible.
  • When turf areas are severely damaged, we look to replace these with instant turf.
  • Fields are regularly Verti drained to help relieve compaction and aerate the soil profile.
  • Excessive grass material is removed from the surface via scarifying to promote a healthy and manageable surface.
  • Low areas are top dressed to provide a level and safe surface as possible.
  • Seasonal changeover from Summer to Winter activities

A lot of these maintenance actions occur during the warmer months to coincide with the grass’ optimum growth and help with a quick recovery of the sports field, which will cause as little disruption as possible.
