Wilsons Road, Mornington set for safety upgrades

Construction works to improve safety along Wilsons Road, Mornington will begin next month.  

Wilson's Road is a busy thoroughfare connecting Nepean Highway to the Esplanade. Based on community feedback and technical investigations, the following improvements will be implemented: 

• Splitter Islands at the Hampden Street and Pitt Street intersections 
• Kerb extensions and landscaping of the nature strip separating Pitt Street and Orchid Avenue 
• Two wombat crossings at the Orchid Avenue intersection  
• Two raised safety platforms  
• Green pavement treatments for cyclist lanes 
• Lighting upgrades, signage and line markings.  
• Speed limit reduction to 50 km per hour between The Esplanade and Nepean Highway. 

Mayor Stephen Batty said that works were determined based on site investigations, identified risks, Road Safety Audit recommendations and community feedback. "This is a lively neighborhood with a mix of shops and homes, which naturally drives high pedestrian activity," Cr Batty said.  

Ward Councillor Paul Pingiaro said that the upgrades will help people keep to the speed limit and make travelling safer. “Wilsons Road is a popular shortcut, but it’s also a residential street with a vibrant little shopping strip, kids riding bikes, people walking their dogs, and families and sporting groups using the local oval.
These are sensible improvements that will help slow down speeding drivers and make it safer for people to cross the road,” Cr Pingiaro said. 

Works are expected to take up to eight weeks. The road will remain open with traffic controllers managing alternating two-way flow in one lane within the work zone.  

The $388,570 works package is funded by the Australian Government's Black Spot Program.
