Paws for applause as the community shapes a better future for pets

Mornington Peninsula residents have had their say, and their feedback has helped shape our four-year plan to make life better for pets, their people and the wider community. 
 
Earlier this year, more than 650 residents shared their thoughts on everything from leash-free areas to cat roaming and responsible pet ownership.  
 
Proud pet parents spoke about the joy, love and mental health benefits animals bring, while others emphasised the importance of keeping our shared spaces clean, safe and welcoming for everyone. 
 
Your feedback has helped shape the adopted Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026–2029, which sets out how the Shire will support responsible pet ownership and respond to key community priorities, including cleaner public areas and more accessible facilities for pet owners. 
 
Your input has also helped guide several new actions, including: 

• Assessing requests for new leash-free areas. 
• Reviewing existing dog controls in public places, with community input along the way. 
• Considering trials of dog waste bins and bag dispensers in leash-free reserves. 
• Exploring opportunities to create new leash-free spaces.  
• Investigating a Shire-run desexing program for cats and dog.
