Community feedback needed: expanding Morce Avenue car park, Sorrento
Published on 20 February 2025
We’re excited to share four concepts for the expansion of the Morce Avenue car park in Sorrento.
With visitors ever increasing in the popular tourist town in peak holiday season and on long weekends throughout the year, the need for more car parks is evident. Expanding the Morce Avenue car park and reviewing parking limits will reduce congestion in surrounding streets with the proposed increased parking opportunities.
Expanding the car park will also take the pressure off nearby residential streets, which are subjected to parking overflow, especially in summer.
The introduction of parking limits will encourage vehicle turnover. A portion of the car park will remain all day parking to suit local business employees and other longer-stay users.
The four concepts are (in order of cost low to high):
-
Option 4: 108 new parking bays, realignment of Morce Avenue, excavation work, a new retaining wall and further vegetation removal, three new access points to the car park.
The options are at different price points and with varying impacts on vegetation and Morce Avenue. The estimated costs are based on features and associated works (e.g. vegetation removal, realignment of road). Unfortunately, a multi-storey car park would be too costly and as such the former Council decided to endorse at grade car park extension for community consultation back in August 2024.
All four concept plans are available to view on our website or at our customer service centres until 20 March. Please vote for your preferred option!

Quotes attributable to Mayor Councillor Anthony Marsh:
“Parking surveys and analysis have determined the need for additional parking to match the very high demand for parking in Sorrento during summer. As it is now, overflow parking extends into neighbouring residential streets and lack of available parking contributes to significant traffic congestion caused by circulating traffic.”
