Background

The Federal Black Spot Program has approved $106,470 in funding to complete road safety upgrades on the intersection of Browns Road and Jetty Road in Boneo.

The intersection has a recorded crash history of two incidents during the five-year period between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2023, both of which involved cyclists. A Road Safety Audit was also undertaken to identify underlying safety concerns at the intersection. Based on the crash history and audit findings, the key issues contributing to reduced intersection safety were identified as a lack of infrastructure to raise awareness of cyclist presence, restricted sightlines for vehicles turning from the south leg of Browns Road, and road geometry that obscures advance visibility of the intersection from all approaches due to curves and variations in elevation.

To improve road safety at the intersection, it is proposed to install a splitter island with associated signage, concrete aprons, speed advisory signs, and cyclist warning signs. The proposed treatments will enhance safety by reducing vehicle entry speeds at the intersection, providing physical separation of traffic movements, improving intersection visibility, and increasing motorists’ awareness of cyclists at the location.

The Shire will be undertaking consultation for the proposed scope of works.

The project is currently in the concept design stage.

Scope of work includes:

  • A splitter island and concrete aprons at the intersection.
  • Speed advisory signs and cyclist warning signs at the intersection.

Updates will be made to the page as the project progresses.
