Bin inspection program

Peninsula residents are keen recyclers. Most residents want to do the right thing and recycle right. To help residents, the Shire will be inspecting recycling and FOGO bins to provide feedback to households to be able to put the right thing in the right bin!

Why are we doing this?

• The Shire's average contamination rate is 17.8% which is higher than the state average. Bin inspections are part of the Shire’s waste education program to reduce contamination and increase rates of recycling. The inspections will provide direct feedback to encourage households to keep recycling right and help households identify what can and can't go into the household recycling and FOGO bins. 
• Contaminated recycling has to be removed and sent to landfill. This means lost resources as many incidents are items that have food residue or can be recycled but not through kerbside collections.
• Contaminated recycling costs the Shire. The Shire now must pay the additional cost to dispose of contaminated recycling.  
• It is still important that we continue to recycle. Recycling reduces the demand for new resources, reduces energy and water used to make products and minimises the waste sent to landfill.

My bin has tag attached, what happens now?

• Some bin tags provide positive feedback. You don't need to change anything, keep up the great work!
• The bin tags provide feedback to households as to what items might be in the wrong bin or presented in a way that can't be accepted. Moist bins will still be emptied as normal
• In some cases, there may be a problem with collecting your recycling or green waste bin (e.g.significant contamination), and in these circumstances your bin lid will be taped shut and not collected. 

My bin lid was tagged and taped shut

Bins that are significantly contaminated or contain hazardous materials will be tagged (to indicate the contamination) and taped shut. This is to inform the driver that the bin is not to be emptied. Trucks will not return until the next scheduled collection and contaminating item/s have been removed.
