Household rubbish

 

You can dispose of your rubbish using the:

  • weekly rubbish bin collection from your nature strip
  • booked hard or green waste collection service (for a fee or waste vouchers, bookings are essential) and / or
  • taking your rubbish to one of our resource recovery centres and hoppers.
  • Resource recovery centres are located in Mornington, Rye and Tyabb. Fees apply, pay by ETPOS, credit card or waste vouchers (printed or uploaded digitally from rates notice or resident services app for tenants)
  • Our hoppers are located in Dromana, Sorrento and Flinders. Fees apply, pay by ETPOS or credit card ONLY

Please note: During peak times (Free Green Waste Events and around the waste voucher expiry period at the end of September), customers may be prevented from joining the queue from 3:30pm (weekends and public holidays) and from 2:30pm (weekdays), to ensure the site can close on time.

Dangerous items such as gas bottles, vapes and batteries should NOT be disposed of in kerbside bins. These can be disposed of for FREE at our resource recovery centres.

When is your rubbish bin collected?

Find your bin day on My Neighbourhood or view the bin calendars.

Rubbish is collected weekly - Monday to Friday – on the same day of the week throughout the entire year (including public holidays, Good Friday and Christmas Day). 

Place your bins on the nature strip with the wheels facing your property the night before collection day. 

Bring your bin back in by the end of the day of collection.

What to put in your rubbish bin?

Household waste is anything that cannot be:

It's important not to put these items in your rubbish bin: Green waste, syringes, medical waste, oil, unwrapped vacuum dust or ashes, paint, chemicals and solvents, timber, building materials, batteries, electronic waste and any other liquids. Many of these items can be recycled for free at our Resource Recovery Centres, check our waste disposal guide for further information.

Ordering a new or extra bin

The standard household garbage bin is an 80 litre bin with a dark green lid. 

If you have moved and do not have a rubbish and/or recycling bin please get in touch.

The Shire provides larger rubbish, bins to residential properties for an additional fee. Recycling and green waste bins are also available.

Missed bin

If your rubbish bin was placed on the kerbside the night before the day of collection, it should be emptied by the end of the collection day.  

If your rubbish bin was not collected, please call us on 5950 1000 or 1300 850 600 within 2 business days.

Our new trucks have a slower lift which closes the lid after releasing the bin. If you suspect the bin hasn't been emptied, please lift the lid to check before reporting.

What happens next: Leave your bin out in its usual collection spot. We'll come by to empty it.

If your bin is overloaded or has hazardous waste, it will not be emptied. Use our waste guide to dispose of your waste correctly.

 

Lost, damaged or stolen bins

If your rubbish bin becomes damaged, please get in touch to have it repaired or replaced. 

If you think your bin may have been stolen or is lost, there are a couple of steps you can take: 

  1. Check your letterbox for a slip from your bin collection contractor  
  2.  If you don’t have a slip in your letterbox, submit a Lost Bin Declaration form
