Staying safe on the Mornington Peninsula this summer means thinking ahead. From fires to heatwaves to theft, taking a few simple steps can protect you, your family, and your community.
Be fire ready
If you’re on the Peninsula during summer, make sure you’re prepared for bushfires:
- Download the VicEmergency app
- Check your fire danger rating every day
- Learn about bushfire places of last resort
- Have a bushfire plan and leave early if needed.

Considering burning off?
During the declared Fire Danger Period, open-air burning is not allowed, regardless of property size.
- Open-air burning is different from cooking with barbecues, pizza ovens, or heating in braziers or chimineas.
- During a Total Fire Ban, lighting fires or solid fuel heaters and barbecues is illegal.

Beat the heat
Heat-related illnesses can be serious. During a heatwave:
- Stay cool and hydrated
- Never leave kids, pets, or adults in a hot car
- Seek out cool public spaces such as shopping centres or libraries
- Remember to slip, slop, slap if you’re outside
- Check in on friends and family who may be vulnerable during extreme heat.

Don’t invite crime – lock every time
Victoria Police remind everyone to take simple steps to prevent theft and keep your property and community safe:
- Lock all doors and close all windows
- Keep valuables out of sight
- Report suspicious activity: 000 (urgent) or 131 444 (non-urgent)
