NAIDOC week 2025

NAIDOC Week is just around the corner and we’re excited to invite everyone to join in a week full of events, creativity and connection.

This year’s theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy,” is all about honouring the past, celebrating the present and empowering our young leaders for the future.

At the Shire, we’re committed to walking alongside our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

NAIDOC Week is a special opportunity for all of us to learn, share and connect – building on the relationships that make our region such a welcoming place for everyone.

Our Reconciliation Action Plan is at the heart of what we do – helping us create opportunities to learn, celebrate and walk forward together.

What’s on for NAIDOC Week

Unveiling of youth artwork

Monday 30 June, Tounnin Wominjeka Youth Hub,

We’re kicking things off a little early this year with something special. First Nations students from four local schools have worked alongside an artist, learning about Aboriginal art and sharing their own ideas. Each student designed a unique boomerang, now featured in a stunning new artwork that celebrates both individuality and community spirit.

New public art exhibition: Heart of Country by Skyla Lauch
Launch: Sunday 6 July, 10.30am – 12pm. Exhibition runs until Sunday12 October. Mornington Library

Skyla’s Heart of Country artwork celebrates the interconnectedness of community, land, and culture. Featuring vibrant colours and meaningful symbols, it reflects the strength, unity, and enduring legacy of First Nations peoples.

At its heart, the piece underscores the deep love and care we must hold for our land, reminding us that every individual path contributes to the greater whole. The artwork stands as a tribute to the next generation, while honouring the Elders who have shaped our journey.

“NAIDOC Week is a time for everyone to come together, learn and celebrate the world’s oldest living culture.

“Here at the Shire, we’re proud to be part of a community that values respect, listening and shared experiences. Our Reconciliation Action Plan helps guide our ongoing work with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, and we’re always looking for ways to learn and grow together.”
