From Tyabb to Tootgarook, Sorrento to Somerville and every town in between, the community spirit shines strong. At every sports club, youth hub, friends group, volunteer organisation and support centre there are outstanding humans making a real difference to the lives of those around them. It’s thanks to these people that the Peninsula is such a wonderful place to be.

Each year, we invite our community to recognise someone very special by nominating them for the Australia Day Local Awards. Nominations are now open, and anyone can nominate someone who makes life on the Peninsula great.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Stephen Batty praised this year’s winners “2026 saw two amazing locals take out citizen of the year and young citizen of the year awards. Chantelle Ross set up Projex J, a grieving group for bereaved families after she tragically lost her son." Cr Batty said.

“Young legend, Reagan Morel advocated for young people’s voices to be heard and started the Life Saving Victoria's Junior Advisory Committee.

“Nominations are also open for community event of the year – so if you’ve been to an event that impressed you, give the organisers a pat on the back by acknowledging them with a nomination!

“Along with well-deserved recognition, the citizens of the year will receive a custom profile video produced by the Shire to help promote their cause.”

Nominations are now open and close 18 September. It’s easier than ever to nominate someone, so don’t hesitate!
