Iconic Studio 3 revived for new generation of musicians

A unique new collaboration between Mornington Peninsula Shire, RPP FM and Capel Sound Studios is set to breathe new life into a much-loved local recording space, with the launch of Studio 3, a dedicated rehearsal, recording and artist development hub for Mornington Peninsula musicians.

Located within RPP FM's Mornington studios, Studio 3 has long been part of the Peninsula's music story. The space was home to the late Redro Rodriguez's (Moonah Arts) iconic Sunday Sessions, where local musicians and bands dropped in for interviews and live recordings that were later broadcast across the region.

RPP FM Station Manager Chris Mofadin said Studio 3's revival reflects the strength of the Peninsula's music community.

"Studio 3 has a proud history of supporting local music, and we're rapt to see this much-loved space being revitalised for a new generation of artists," Chris said.

Now, the studio is entering a new chapter. Through a 24-week Music Activation Program pilot, Studio 3 will once again become a hub for local music-making. Delivered by Capel Sound Studios, it will give emerging and established artists free access to professional rehearsal and recording facilities, technical support, mentoring from experienced producers and musicians, and practical artist development opportunities.

Dan Swan, Capel Sound Studios, said the program will help local artists access opportunities that can be difficult to find early in their careers.

"The Music Activation Program at Studio 3 creates a genuine pathway for emerging local musicians, bringing together creative development, professional support and opportunities to connect their music with the wider community," Dan said.

Designed to strengthen the Mornington Peninsula's music sector, the initiative aims to reduce barriers to accessing professional creative spaces while helping local artists build the skills, networks and confidence needed to further their careers.

Mayor Stephen Batty said the initiative reflects the Shire's commitment to nurturing a thriving creative community.

Councillor Max Patton, Council representative on the Arts and Culture Advisory Panel, said the initiative highlights the value of partnerships in supporting local creative talent.

"Studio 3 is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when community organisations come together around a shared vision," Cr Patton said.

Participants will also take part in monthly workshops covering recording techniques, instrument sounds and equipment, release pathways, and navigating the music industry after recording.

For now, access to Studio 3 is exclusively through the Music Activation Program, with future access opportunities to be explored as the pilot progresses.
