Mornington Peninsula Shire is inviting the community to attend Dying to Know Day, a free event designed to encourage open conversations about death, dying and planning for the end of life. The event will take place on Thursday 6 August, 10.30am – 12.30pm at the Peninsula Community Theatre, Mornington, followed by a light lunch. Part of a national campaign to reduce stigma and encourage people to plan ahead, this year’s theme, ‘Nobody Knows’, highlights the importance of sharing end-of-life wishes with loved ones. Attendees will hear from expert speakers on key aspects of end-of-life care, including palliative care, which focuses on comfort, dignity and quality of life. The program will also cover voluntary assisted dying, outlining the legal options available to eligible individuals, as well as grief, loss and bereavement support. The event is open to everyone and will also be livestreamed via Radio Port Phillip (RPP FM), making it accessible to people in aged care and those unable to attend in person. Mayor Cr Stephen Batty said the event plays an important role in supporting community wellbeing. “While conversations about death can be difficult, they are essential. Dying to Know Day provides a safe and supportive environment for people to learn, reflect and share their wishes with those who matter most. “Planning ahead helps ensure people’s values and preferences are understood, easing the burden on family and friends”he said. Community members are encouraged to attend and take part in this important conversation about end-of-life planning and support.
