Community invited to shine a green light on homelessness

The Shire is encouraging residents, businesses, schools and community groups to take part in 'Shine a Light on Homelessness' during Homelessness Week by leaving a green light on for the night of Wednesday 5 August.  
 
A green light is a simple but visible way to raise awareness of homelessness and housing insecurity on the Peninsula, and to show solidarity with those without a safe or secure place to call home. 

Free green light bulbs will be available from Mornington Peninsula Shire customer service centres from Monday 27 July, while stocks last. 

As part of the campaign, the McCrae Lighthouse, YAWA Aquatic Centre and Mornington Peninsula Shire offices will also be illuminated in green, creating a visible reminder that homelessness is an issue affecting our local community. 

Mayor Cr Stephen Batty said Homelessness Week is particularly significant for the Mornington Peninsula, which continues to record the highest number of people sleeping rough of any municipality in Victoria, including Melbourne's CBD. 

"Homelessness can affect anyone and is often the result of circumstances beyond a person's control, including housing affordability pressures, family violence and financial hardship.

"By leaving a light on, our community can help shine a light on an issue that is often hidden and show support for those experiencing homelessness" he said.

Homelessness Week will feature community events, including:

• The Ranch Winter Sleep Out (31 July)
  Community members are invited to spend a night sleeping in a tent or their car at The Ranch Adventure Park to gain a small insight into the challenges many people experiencing homelessness face, particularly during winter. 
• Information Session: Mornington Peninsula's Housing Story (4 August)
  Mornington Peninsula Shire is hosting a free online information session featuring a live demonstration of the housing.id tool. Attendees will gain insights into local housing trends, supply, demand and affordability, and learn how to access housing data through the free Housing Monitor platform.
• Shine a Light on Homelessness (5 August)
  Residents, businesses, schools and community groups are encouraged to leave a porch light, window light or LED candle on overnight as a symbol of hope and solidarity with people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity.  
• Volunteer and Service Provider Appreciation Dinner (5 August)
  An invitation-only event recognising and thanking the dedicated volunteers, frontline workers and community organisations whose tireless efforts support people experiencing homelessness across the Mornington Peninsula. 
• One Night Without (6 August)
  Led by Western Port Community Support, this community challenge encourages participants to give up one everyday comfort, such as a bed, heating or a meal, to help raise awareness, foster empathy and inspire action. 
• Youth Homelessness Forum (7 August)
  Community leaders, service providers and stakeholders will come together to discuss youth homelessness on the Mornington Peninsula and explore ways to better support young people at risk.
