Project Summary

Following a landslip in September 2020, stabilisation and road reinstatement works are underway on The Esplanade, Mount Martha, between Ellerina Road and Bradford Road.

The landslip involved approximately 30 tonnes of material moving down the slope and blocking the service road, restricting access to a nearby property. Fortunately, no pedestrians or vehicles were involved, and no one was injured.

The project will improve the long-term stability of the slope and restore access by constructing two retaining walls and rebuilding the affected section of road. Once complete, the works will reinstate residential access and improve connectivity for local residents.

To facilitate construction, traffic conditions on The Esplanade will remain changed, with one traffic lane closed until late 2026.

The project has been carefully designed to address the impacts of the landslip, with no concerns identified regarding the structural integrity of homes located above the affected area.

Once complete, these works will provide a safer, more resilient road network and help protect this section of The Esplanade from future slope movement.

Project Scope

 Works include:

  • Retaining wall construction comprises of temporary piling pads, bored piles, steel posts and precast concrete sleepers, with associated drainage and reinstatement works.

  • New and modified stormwater and subsurface drainage to manage water behind and around the walls.

  • Road reinstatement.

  • Landscaping and revegetation of disturbed areas.

  • Relocation/protection of existing underground services.

Construction Update

Retaining wall 1

Construction of the temporary pilling pad and concrete bored piles has been completed. Installation of the steel columns, concrete sleepers and backfilling of wall is underway with an expected completion by the end of September.

Reinstatement of the access road at the top of the wall and landscaping works will then follow.

Retaining wall 2

Construction of the temporary piling pad at retaining wall two is now complete. This will allow the piling equipment to safely commence construction of the concrete bored piles.

Bored piling and sleeper wall construction will continue over the next three months.

Reinstatement of the access road and landscaping works will then follow.

Background Information

In September 2020, a 30-tonne landslip occurred on the slope above The Esplanade in Mount Martha, completely blocking The Esplanade between Ellerina Road and Bradford Road while cutting access to one property.

Fortunately, no pedestrians or vehicles were in the immediate vicinity when the incident occurred, and no one was injured.

A large earth fracture was also observed at another location, below 251 Esplanade right on the edge of the access road.

Works are underway to construct a retaining wall to stabilise the site and reinstate service road. Traffic flow on The Esplanade will be impacted with one lane closed until late 2026.

There is no concern for the structural integrity of the houses above the landslip.
