Mornington Peninsula Shire has completed the third and final stage of the Bentons Road upgrade in Moorooduc – one of the Peninsula’s significant east-west road corridors.

This project was part of the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery funding program.

The completed project has improved the section of Bentons Road between Moorooduc Highway and Derril Road and included road widening, drainage works, the installation of crash barriers, and an upgrade of the Gorman/Rickards/Bentons roads intersection. This followed on from the already completed widening of Loders Road, as well as the construction of the roundabout at the intersection of Bentons Road and Derril Road.

As part of the Council’s Environmentally Sustainable Design Policy the project was assessed and a 1.6km stretch of Bentons Road was constructed with crumbed rubber asphalt – an asphalt product reusing old tyres.

Australia generates the equivalent of 56 million used car tyres every year. Around 30% of those end up in landfill or are stockpiled. Incorporating crumb rubber asphalt into roads is one of the ways we can tackle this waste problem.

All construction works have been completed and the road is now open to the public.
