The objective of this project is to improve motorcyclist safety at the intersection of Browns Road and Jetty Road. This section has been identified as a dangerous site for motorcyclists due to the following factors:
Roadside hazards: Several roadside hazards located on the outside of the roadway on the outer edge of the roadway around the intersection which are unprotected, which are a risk for motorcyclists to strike should they exit the carriageway on this curve.
Sightlines: Sightlines looking for vehicles travelling southbound on Jetty Road to the intersection is limited due to existing vegetation along the north eastern side of the roadway.
Signage: Existing CAMs for some curves are in poor condition and do not appear to have been installed at the correct location and spacing as required in AS1742.2, reducing their effectiveness at guiding motorists through the curve. At this curve, it was noted that one of the CAMs is separated by the other CAMs by the intersection with Jetty Road and that one of the CAMs is facing the wrong direction.
To address these issues, the following treatments are proposed:
Installation of road safety barriers on the outside of the curve with underrun protection and Gating Redirective Energy-Absorbing Terminals (GREAT)
Trim back vegetation to improve sightlines
Replace the existing CAMs with new CAMs with appropriate spacing
Install Audio Tactile Centre Linemarking (ATCL)
