Leash-Free Site Nomination

When Council developed the Dogs in Public Places Policy in 2022, we heard from 771 residents and visitors about all things dog-related across the Mornington Peninsula Shire. To ensure we keep listening to the community, we have developed a process for the nomination of new leash-free sites, so if you have a great idea, we'd love to hear about it!

What are the criteria for new leash-free areas?

To ensure we have a consistent approach to leash-free areas across the Mornington Peninsula Shire, some of the things we will look at when assessing community nominations are:

  • Community needs and demand
  • Land availability and suitability
  • Impacts of dogs on other users of the space
  • Impacts of dogs on the environment and surrounds
  • Risk and safety
  • Leash-free area design guidelines
