Mornington Peninsula Shire, Bass Coast Shire and Casey, Cardinia, and Greater Dandenong Councils have been working together to address the high number of non-fatal and fatal drownings across the regions. This collaborative effort, involving Life Saving Victoria, Belgravia Leisure, and a local community group The Back Beach Collective, aims to tackle the alarming drowning rates affecting both local residents and visitors across the five councils.
The focus is on community capacity building, advocacy, and infrastructure improvements to reduce drowning incidents on our beaches and inland waterways. The framework provides an overview of drowning incidents in the region over the past decade and will guide water safety and drowning prevention efforts to address key trends and risk factors.
Mornington Peninsula and Bass Coast Shires are recognised as drowning blackspots in Victoria with alarming statistics.
That stunning beach photo on social media might look perfect, but the reality behind the lens could be very different. Before entering the water, always check the conditions – currents, tides, and potential hazards. What looks like paradise can often have hidden dangers.
