Statement from the Mayor

Residents of eight properties impacted by the landslide at McCrae will now be allowed to safely move back into their homes.

Emergency Orders were lifted at 2.50pm today on these eight properties following the installation of additional ground stability monitoring equipment on Wednesday.

The specialised equipment, including Global Navigation Satellite Systems, tilt sensors and survey prisms, can provide ongoing stability monitoring over the entire area, giving greater certainty regarding safety and risk factors.

This new information also means some additional residents will be allowed temporary supervised access to their properties early next week, in order to collect essential items and address any perishable goods.

We are also working closely with utility providers to reinstate power and water services to these homes. In the event power is not reinstated in time for those residents returning to their homes, we are investigating installing generators for the interim.

These are all very positive steps forward in the recovery phase. Safety remains our top priority as we continue gathering data to inform next steps and work towards returning normalcy to the area.

Conditions and risk factors vary across the exclusion zone. We are working with the geotechnical engineers to further understand and assess conditions at the remaining 11 properties.

We continue to communicate and meet with residents to discuss issues and share information. We understand this is a challenging situation and that residents have many questions. This is a complex event and we are working to address concerns and provide information and certainty wherever possible.
