Container Deposit Scheme Basket Trial

Mornington Peninsula Shire has installed 90 Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) exchange ‘baskets’ on public litter bins across the Peninsula as part of a 12-month trial to increase recycling and reduce litter.

Starting July 2025, community members are encouraged to leave their empty, eligible drink containers in a basket, or collect the ones already there, and take them to your closest refund point for a 10-cent refund. It’s a small act that will make a big difference—for the planet and our community.

The trial is being run in partnership with CDS Vic, the state’s CDS scheme coordinator, and is based on a successful model piloted in other states.

How it works
  • When you’re out and about and you finish a drink, find one of our dedicated CDS baskets located alongside public rubbish bins.
  • Either leave your empty containers or collect the ones already in the basket and return them to a CDS refund point for a 10-cent refund.
  • This community exchange approach helps reduce litter and supports recycling across the Peninsula.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of containers can go in the baskets?

Most drink containers between 150ml and 3L are eligible for a 10-cent refund. Look for the 10c mark on the label. Some containers aren’t accepted, such as plain milk bottles, wine bottles, and spirit bottles. Check if your container is eligible.

Who do the containers in the baskets belong to?

Anyone in the community is welcome to take eligible containers from the baskets and return them to a refund point for the 10c refund.

Where can I take the containers for a refund?

There are many refund points across the Peninsula, including depots and over-the-counter locations.

Why doesn’t my local bin have a basket?

This is a 12-month trial, so baskets have only been installed in select high-traffic areas, such as popular foreshore reserves.
