Collections care seminar series

AMAGA Collection Series

Mornington Peninsula Shire, in collaboration with Australian Museums and Galleries Association (AMAGA) Victoria, are promoting a series of online "Collection Care" seminars for Local History Network members.

Presented as a series of four online sessions, these seminars will cover the essentials for effectively caring for and managing your collection.

Each workshop will follow on from the previous but can also be attended individually if there is a particular topic of interest.

These sessions funded by the Shire’s Local History Network Volunteer Training Program, and are free for participants to attend.

Collections Care Seminar Series #1: Policy planning and development

Thu 20 Apr, 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

This is the first seminar in the Collections Care Seminar Series, which will explore the importance of policy development and planning for effective collections care within museums and galleries. Throughout the presentation, participants will learn about the key components of effective policy development and implementation, and the ways in which they can be used to ensure the responsible management and long-term preservation of the collections in their care.

Topics covered will include:

  • The role of policies in ensuring the responsible management of collections
  • Best practices and ethical considerations in planning, developing, and implementing policies
  • Review of the core policies related to collections care (i.e. collection policy, preventative conservation policy/action plan)

The seminar will also provide opportunities for participants to share their experiences and insights, as well as to engage in group discussions. By the end of the seminar, participants will have a deeper understanding of the importance of policy development for effective collections care and will have gained practical knowledge and skills to develop and implement policies in their own institutions.

Collections Care Seminar Series #2: Collection auditing and legacy issues

Tue 20 Jun, 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

This is the second seminar in the Collections Care Seminar Series, which will discuss auditing and legacy issues. Museums and galleries have a responsibility to preserve and protect their collections for future generations. However, the history of collections can be quite complex, with acquisitions and collections that may not have documented provenance or may have been obtained through questionable means. This is where auditing and addressing legacy issues becomes crucial. By conducting a comprehensive audit, institutions can ensure that their collections are complete and accurate, while making attempts to address any issues that come to light along the way.

Our seminar will cover a range of topics, including:

  • The importance and benefits of conducting regular audits
  • Planning and developing methodologies for auditing, including considerations around sequencing
  • Addressing health and safety issues (i.e. inherent hazards within collection items)
  • Addressing legacy issues (i.e. lack of provenance) and developing documentation practices that ensure transparency and accuracy
  • Ethical and legal considerations that arise when addressing legacy issues, including repatriation, restitution, and collaborative efforts with source communities
  • Case studies or examples in these areas

This seminar is ideal for professionals and volunteers who work in the museum and gallery sector. It is also relevant for members of the public who have an interest in the preservation and protection of cultural heritage, and value the importance of collections as a record of our shared cultural heritage.

Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussions and ask questions of the presenters, enabling a deeper understanding of collection auditing and addressing legacy issues in a sensitive and responsible manner.
