We love to bring you good news stories from within the Shire! Kenzie and Bill have been part of the community at Mornington Library for more than six years now, helping shy and challenged readers reach their full potential.
The dynamic duo of Kenzie, a gentle therapy dog, and Bill, her dedicated handler, have worked tirelessly with young readers who face various challenges. Through the Story Dogs program, they provide a safe and non-judgmental environment where children can improve their reading skills. Kenzie's presence helps reduce the anxiety often associated with reading aloud, transforming it into an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
We've had participants enter the program in their final year of primary school with a reading level of a grade 1, only to leave the program a year later with a reading level of a grade 5! These remarkable improvements are not just about better grades; they represent increased confidence, self-esteem, and a newfound love for reading.
In addition to those who start with significant challenges, we've also seen participants who simply wanted to read more challenging books like their friends. Thanks to the support and encouragement from Kenzie and Bill, these children have gone on to achieve their goals, discovering new worlds and adventures within the pages of their books.
We're so appreciative of Bill, Kenzie, and the Story Dogs program for the changes they're making in the lives of some of our youngest residents. Their dedication and compassion are truly making a difference, one story at a time.
