Our 2025 Local Australia Day Awards have spotlighted extraordinary individuals and events embodying the true spirit of community service and dedication.

Each of this year’s winners has made a lasting impact on the Peninsula through their tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to giving back.

Here are their inspiring stories:

Citizen of the Year: Denise Palmer

Denise Palmer’s name has become synonymous with selfless service on the Mornington Peninsula. For over 20 years, she has been a pillar of support for her community, most notably as the Coordinator of the Hastings Police Senior Citizens Register for the past 15 years. Despite personal battles with cancer and arthritis, Denise has remained a source of resilience and leadership, overseeing a program that supports over 950 vulnerable individuals.

From organising well-being checks to introducing a lifesaving ID card system, Denise has consistently prioritised the safety and inclusivity of those in need. Her efforts in securing a vehicle for home visits and her ability to lead a team of 30 volunteers have brought much-needed connection to disadvantaged residents. Denise’s remarkable contributions exemplify the impact of compassion and determination.

Young Citizen of the Year: Phoebe Lambden

At just 18 years old, Phoebe Lambden is already a shining example of youth leadership and service. A dedicated member of the Rosebud Sea Scouts, Phoebe has made a profound difference, mentoring youth and adult leaders alike. Her ability to provide support, whether through organising camps or offering comfort to those facing challenges, has earned her widespread admiration.

Phoebe’s qualifications in sailing, paddling, and rescue boat operations, combined with her First Aid training, make her an invaluable asset to the Scouting community. Her contributions to major events like Kangaree 2022 and Boost 2023 highlight her dedication to fostering resilience and confidence in young people, inspiring the next generation of leaders.

Community Event of the Year: Tyabb Air Show 2024

The Tyabb Air Show 2024, hosted by the Peninsula Aero Club, was a resounding success, drawing over 8,000 attendees and raising $42,500 for local charities and organisations. This biennial event, with its rich aviation heritage and economic benefits, has become a cornerstone of community spirit on the Mornington Peninsula.

From showcasing Victoria’s emergency services to supporting local businesses with 17 food vendors, the Air Show provided a platform for connection and generosity. The proceeds were distributed to worthy causes, including the Tyabb CFA, Westernport Community Support Group, and local sporting clubs, leaving an enduring legacy of support and goodwill.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Nina and Colin Blythe

For over three decades, Nina and Colin Blythe have dedicated their lives to serving the Mornington Peninsula. From leading the Lions Ride for Sight to supporting the SES and organising aid during crises, their contributions have been extraordinary. Despite personal challenges, including Nina’s battle with cancer, their unwavering commitment has uplifted countless lives.

The Blythes’ efforts extend to initiatives like the Dromana Australia Day breakfast, local fundraising projects, and supporting schools and charities. Their partnership exemplifies selflessness and the power of working together to create meaningful change.

Community Inspiration Award: Barry Randall

Barry Randall, a Victoria Police Sergeant and founder of Operation Soul Surf (OSS), has transformed lives through his innovative surf therapy program. OSS has provided mental health support to over 150 first responders and veterans, fostering healing through the power of the ocean. Barry’s dedication has garnered recognition and partnerships, including with Victoria Police, amplifying the program’s reach and impact.

Barry’s work has been a lifeline for many, showcasing the profound effects of combining community service with mental health advocacy. His mantra, “Healing minds one wave at a time,” is a testament to his inspiring mission.
