Explore, observe and connect with nature this Biodiversity Month

We’re celebrating Biodiversity Month this September with free opportunities to connect with nature, learn about local biodiversity and contribute to citizen science. 

Mayor Stephen Batty said that Biodiversity Month is a good excuse to head outdoors. “I encourage everyone to take part in BioBlitz,” said Cr Batty. 

"By taking part in Bio Blitz, residents can make a genuine contribution to citizen science. Every observation adds to our collective knowledge and helps inform future conservation and land management efforts. 

“For those wanting to explore some of our wonderful bushland reserves, I recommend signing up to one of our free guided walks.” 

Throughout September, participants can join BioBlitz by recording observations of local plants and animals using the free iNaturalist app. From birds and butterflies to wildflowers, fungi and marine life, every record helps build a picture of biodiversity across the Peninsula and contributes valuable information that supports conservation, research and environmental management. 

 Get involved in BioBlitz 

1. Download the free iNaturalist app on your smartphone. 
2. Sign up to create your profile (or log in if you already have one). 
3. From 1 September, head out into nature, take photos of your plant, animal, or fungi finds, and upload them to the app. 
4. Your observations will automatically be added to the Mornington Peninsula BioBlitz 2025 project tally on iNaturalist.
