What's on display at the Eco Living Display Centre?

The Eco Living Display Centre is a retrofitted home showcasing sustainable innovations, materials and products.

Find out how to reduce your environmental impact while making your home more comfortable and cheaper to run!

Save money on energy bills

With energy prices rising, we have more incentive to save energy in the home. The Centre showcases energy saving innovations including: solar power and battery, hot water heat pump, ventilation, insulation, window coverings and glazing.

- Heating and cooling

Reverse cycle air conditioners are most efficient at heating and cooling your home. We also have an example of a heat pump hydronic system, which can heat your home efficiently through radiator panels:

- Hot water systems

Heat pump hot water systems are 3-4 times more energy efficient and cost-effective to operate than gas.  Find out more

- Solar and battery

The Eco Living Display Centre has a 5kW system containing 18 panels. It produces approximately 1/3 of the energy required for the average household.

-Sustainable Design

You can also see sustainable design options including passive design, use of thermal mass, interior and exterior sustainable material options and the features of an all-electric home.

Save money on water bills

Tour the Centre to find out ways to save water at home. This includes grey water recycling, water tanks, flow restrictors on taps and showerheads and water efficient appliances.

Get into the garden

A well-designed garden can provide us with nutritious, tasty food and significantly cool our house in summer. The Centre's garden has been designed to minimise water use. It includes rainwater tanks, rain garden, drip fed irrigation, compost bins, a worm farms, indigenous gardens, wicking beds and no-dig garden beds.

Solar and batteries at the Eco Living Display Centre

A solar photovoltaic (PV) system captures sunlight energy and converts it to usable electricity, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and long-term energy costs

Batteries enable you to store this solar energy and use it at peak times or when the sun is not shining.

Our solar and battery systems

The Eco Living Display Centre has a 5kW system containing 18 panels. It produces approximately 1/3 of the energy required for the average household. Our solar and battery system operates with net zero annual emissions - it produces more energy than it consumes.

We selected a solar inverter that allows the system to operate independently of the grid in the event of a power outage.

The flow of power works on a priority system. Power generated by the panels is first used in the house, then excess power charges the battery. If the battery is fully charged, power will be sent to the grid, giving you a credit on your energy bill.

When the panels aren’t producing power, the battery will supply power to the house before grid electricity is used. Solar optimisers have been installed on each panel to minimise energy loss from shading.

Online software allows us to track solar energy production and the battery and grid use of the centre.
