Buy Nothing New Month

Buy Nothing New markets

Every year, the Peninsula throws out 33,000 tonnes of waste. Cut back on waste and take the challenge to Buy Nothing New this October.

Make your pledge to buy nothing new

Tips to reducing waste

  1. Fix it. Before replacing an item, consider whether it can be fixed. If you’re not handy with the tools, visit your nearest Repair Café to learn from volunteer fixers
  2. Swap it. Hold a swap event and exchange items with the neighbours, friends and family
  3. Upcycle. Make it new again with a coat of paint or new features
  4. Give it away. Donate your sellable items to the local charity shop, family or friends
  5. Borrow it. Visit the local library or subscribe to the toy library
  6. Buy second-hand. Find a bargain and save items from landfill by shopping at the op shop or the Outlook store

Hold a stall

During Buy Nothing New Month, the Shire is offering to cover stall fees at participating community markets to help residents give things a new life and reduce waste to landfill on the Peninsula.

If you are interested in running a stall at participating markets, register your interest by contacting the markets with the code word MPS BNNM 2019. You must use the code word to be eligible for the Shire sponsored stall.

All Shire sponsored stalls must complete the stall record template(PDF, 135KB) and return it to the market coordinators.

Limited Shire stalls available. Terms and conditions apply.
