Responsible pet ownership

Victoria has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world. Owning pets can be a lot of fun, and pets can provide us with company, stress relief and unconditional love. Pet ownership also teaches children responsibility and helps them develop their social and nurturing skills.

How to be a good bushland neighbour
Cats and dogs are part of our family unit and as such it is our responsibility to control their wandering habits. It is always traumatic to see your cat or dog with dead native animals. One of the most important things you can do to look after our native fauna and biodiversity values is to be a responsible pet owner.

Desexing & Microchipping

Since May 2007 it has been mandatory for all cats and dogs to be microchipped prior to registration.

Barking Dogs

The owners of the nuisance dog are sometimes not aware of the problem. Although barking is a natural behaviour for dogs, excessive barking is often a sign that something is ‘wrong’.

Cat Cages

Cat cages are available for loan to residents who have a nuisance cat problem at their property, to assist them to catch the nuisance cat. The Shire has a limited number of cat cages are available for loan. However there are conditions.

Confinement of Pets

The Shire has adopted a municipality-wide order which requires all cats to be contained within the owner’s property at all times ( the same as the requirements for dogs to be securely confined to the owners' premises).
