Register a new health or accommodation business

So you're ready to register your new health or accommodation business! First, let's go through the process and make sure you've got everything you need before you apply.

Registering a New Health Business

Step 1.Make sure you've got all the information

First you'll need to make sure you understand everything you'll be required to do. This might include complying with various regulations and legislation or checking you don't need other approvals prior to registering. To get some more information, make sure you check:

  • With the Shire's Statutory Planning department to determine if any permits or restrictions apply to the property
  • With a private Building Surveyor to determine if any permits, restrictions or works are required under the Building Code
  • The guidelines and regulations for the type of business you are registering. Information for health businesses on registration requirements can be found on the Department of Health website for health businesses

Step 2.Collect everything to submit with your application

You'll need to include a few things with your application. Along with the application, you'll need to include:

  • A photo copy of the driver’s license (both sides) of the proposed proprietor/s
  • A print out of the company detail from ASIC if you are registering under a company name
  • Scaled plans that comply with Health Guidelines for Personal Care and Body Care Industries and the Mornington Peninsula Fact File: Personal Care and Body Arts Industry(DOC, 51KB)
  • A brief description of your business

Step 4.What happens next?

Once your application has been received, an officer will contact you to organise an inspection of the premises. Once approved, you will receive a Certificate of Registration.

For hairdressers, once you have your Certificate of Registration you won't need to do anything further. Your registration is ongoing and will not need to be regularly renewed. You will have to notify the Shire in writing if any of your business practices change.

For all other business types, your premises will be registered until 31 March. Registrations are required to be renewed each year. An invitation to renew your business registration will be sent towards the end of the registration period explaining how to renew your registration.

Registering a New Accommodation Business

Step 1.Make sure you've got all the information

First you'll need to make sure there aren't any other approvals you need. To get some more information, make sure you check:

  • With the Shire's Statutory Planning department to determine if any permits or restrictions apply to the property
  • With a private Building Surveyor to determine if any permits, restrictions or works are required under the Building Code
  • If you need to be registered under the Food Act if you plan on serving food. For more information check out our Registering a Food Business page.

Step 2.Collect everything to submit with your application

You'll need to include a few things with your application. Along with the completed application, you'll need to include:

  • A photo copy of the driver’s license (both sides) of the proposed proprietor/s
  • A print out of the company detail from ASIC if you are registering under a company name
  • A brief description of your business (and copy of a menu if you also plan to serve food)

Once your application has been received, along with the application fee and required documents, an officer will contact you to organise an inspection of the premises. Once approved, you will receive a Certificate of Registration.
