Police Point Respite Cottages

Police Point Respite Cottages

Mornington Peninsula Shire is offering a unique opportunity for people caring for others or those recovering from illness by providing respite accommodation at the historic Police Point Respite Cottages in Portsea.

The Respite Program provides a place to take a break from the day to day. You might be caring for someone 24/7, need a break from your treatment routine, or you have completed treatment and would like a place to help you restore your wellbeing in a peaceful setting.

The Respite Cottages are situated on 17.5 hectares of the Police Point Shire Park at Portsea. The cottages are approximately 1.5 hours drive from Melbourne’s CBD and have outstanding coastal scenery and panoramic views of Bass Strait.

What is respite?

Respite is a break from the stresses of day to day life. Respite gives you the opportunity to take a step back and take some time out for yourself with the purpose of supporting you back to a sense of wellbeing; mentally, physically and emotionally.

Staying at the historic Police Point Shire Park is a truly unique and tranquil experience.

The Quarantine Station at Point Nepean was built to manage the spread of infectious diseases in Australia and contains some of the oldest surviving buildings built for this purpose. Police stationed at Police Point, the entrance to the Quarantine Station, played the critical role of restricting access to the Station.

The Quarantine Station operated from 1852 until 1979, when it was taken over by the Department of Defence. In 2004 Police Point Shire Park was established through a Deed of Settlement Trust transferring ownership of a section of the land to Mornington Peninsula Shire.

Located at the entrance to Point Nepean Park Portsea are four historic cottages. The fully renovated and self-contained two and three bedroom heritage cottages have an atmosphere of yesteryear with modern conveniences, such as:

  • Lounge and dining room
  • Kitchen with fridge and cooking facilities
  • Bathroom
  • Heating and air conditioning
  • Linen
  • Television and wifi
  • Washing machine

Please note, the cottages are not disability or wheelchair accessible.
