Somerville Recreation & Community Centre

Reconstruction of the Somerville Recreation and Community Centre is progressing well. The site demolition, sub-surface preparation for the new stadium and the CFA access road is now complete. The Shire will continue to work with the community as the rebuild takes place. Construction completion is scheduled for late March, 2019.

On Tuesday 27 February 2018, Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Bryan Payne and Watson Ward Councillor Julie Morris celebrated the commencement of construction works for the new and improved Somerville Recreation & Community Centre.

Cr Payne said “we’re excited the rebuild has begun and we will see a new and improved facility here for Somerville”.

“This is a great step forward for the sporting community of Somerville and for everyone who has been looking forward to a new recreation centre to enjoy”.

Cr Morris said “What an exciting time for the Somerville community! I look forward to seeing local sporting clubs and the whole community enjoying the new Somerville Recreation and Community Centre in near the future”.

The announcement by the state government in November that it would provide $1.3m funding through the Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Better Indoor Stadiums Fund, together with the commitment by Council of $4.3 million means the new stadium will feature:

  • four multi-sport indoor courts
  • female-friendly change rooms
  • an umpire change room
  • a first aid room
  • tournament office
  • storage and car parking.

The redevelopment will also include refurbishing the damaged community area, and better public areas in the recreation centre.

As part of Council’s commitment to delivering the new four-court stadium, funding will be included in the Shire’s 2018/19 Budget for the planning and design of a new skate park in Somerville as the existing park lies within the proposed footprint of the new stadium.

The mobile skate ramp is available at the nearby Fruit Grower’s Reserve in Somerville as a temporary measure – this is just around the corner from the Somerville Recreation Centre site.

Initial planning and design for a new skate park has commenced and will include extensive community consultation.

It is anticipated that initial consultation for this exciting new project will be in late March, through April 2018.
