Residents from Somerville and surrounding townships are buzzing with the confirmation that construction of a new and expanded facility will commence in January 2018.
The announcement by the state government in November that it would provide $1.3m funding through the Sport and Recreation Victoria’s (SRV) Better Indoor Stadiums Fund, together with the commitment by Council, will result in the delivery of the preferred expanded option.
The new stadium will feature:
- four multi-sport indoor courts,
- female-friendly change rooms,
- an umpire change room,
- a first aid room,
- tournament office, as well as
- storage and car parking.
The redevelopment will also include refurbishing the damaged community area, and better public areas in the recreation centre. The contract for these building works was presented and awarded by Council in December 2017.
As part of Council’s commitment to delivering the new four-court stadium, funding will also be included in the Shire’s 2018/19 Budget for the planning and design of a new skate park in Somerville.
The existing skate park at Somerville lies within the proposed footprint of the new stadium and will need to be relocated. A new site for the skate park will be determined as soon as possible, and planning and design will include an extensive community consultation process.
Council will retain the existing skate park for the upcoming summer school holiday period, followed by the relocation of one of Council’s mobile skate facilities to Somerville.
As the Somerville Recreation & Community Centre remains closed until further notice due to fire, we continue to work closely with the community and user groups to re-establish a community and recreation centre on the site. It is still too early to determine when the building will be re-opened, but we are working hard with the insurers and builders to determine options and timeframes for the reopening of the centre, and will work closely with key user groups throughout this process. We appreciate the patience of the community, user groups and local residents while we work through alternative arrangements and towards rebuilding, as well as the support received from the broader peninsula community, local businesses and sporting associations.
