From asphalt to art: reimagining parking spaces on the Peninsula
Published on 01 November 2024
The Peninsula just got a little more creative! For the first time, our community joined international Park(ing) Day, turning parking spaces in Mornington, Flinders, Blairgowrie, and Hastings into pop-up art hubs!
Park(ing)Day (20 September) is a global, public, participatory project where people across the world temporarily repurpose parking spaces and convert them into public parks and social spaces to advocate for safer, greener and more equitable streets for people.
On the Peninsula, locals and visitors were treated to interactive art, conversation, and creativity – all in the most unexpected places.
Each artist brought something special:
Liz Walker’s “Let’s Talk Green” on Main Street, Mornington sparked discussions on sustainability with an inspiring collection of recycled sculptures.
In Flinders, Eleesa Howard’s “Stitched Stories” invited people to grab a seat, bring their tea, and start knitting together – a cosy scene right on Cook Street!
Over in Hastings, Hyphae Cocreates transformed High Street bays to showcase the beauty of Westernport Bay’s flora and fauna with sculptures and painting.
And for those who went to Blairgowrie, Mia Rappel’s “Blue” offered a calming escape with soft textures and blue tones, while visitors participated in beading and taking in views of the bay.
The event included a community bus tour from Mornington Library, which let people hop from one installation to the next, chat with the artists, and dive into each project’s story.
Park(ing) Day brought out the best in our local talent and showed just how much fun it can be to reimagine our public spaces!
