Farewell to Kenzie: the story time dog who changed everything
Published on 13 December 2024
Seven years, countless young readers, and one incredible dog – Kenzie! The story time legend of Mornington Library has officially retired leaving behind an unforgettable legacy.
Together with her dad Bill and mum Marilyn, Kenzie has turned reluctant readers into bookworms and helped struggling students find their confidence.
This week, Mornington Library threw a farewell celebration fit for a hero. Mayor Councillor Anthony Marsh, Deputy Mayor Councillor Paul Pingiaro, library staff, and community members – including kids who grew up reading with Kenzie – gathered to honour her amazing work.
There were doggy cakes, treats, toys, and plenty of hugs from kids who didn’t want to say goodbye.
From struggles to success: the Kenzie effect
As library staff and parents shared stories during the farewell, it became clear just how impactful Kenzie’s work has been.
Their trailblazing efforts brought the Story Dogs program to life at Mornington Library, delivering real results that went far beyond expectations.
One child started Grade 5 reading at a Grade 1 level and left the program reading at a Grade 5 level, ready to tackle high school with confidence.
Another wanted to join friends in reading Harry Potter but struggled with literacy. Thanks to Kenzie, audiobooks, and a little encouragement, they got to experience the magic of Hogwarts.
Kenzie’s magic didn’t stop at literacy. For kids with ADHD, dyslexia, or severe reading anxiety, her calm presence made all the difference.
One young boy who couldn’t get through a picture book during the pandemic is now diving into chapter books – and loving every minute of it!
Even VCE students found solace in Kenzie’s company. She became a study buddy, offering much-needed cuddles and stress relief during exam season.
A legacy that will be missed
Kenzie’s seven-year journey has left a lasting legacy on Mornington Library and the entire community.
From boosting literacy levels to building self-esteem, their impact has been nothing short of transformational.
As Kenzie heads off into well-deserved retirement (with plenty of treats and belly rubs, no doubt), Mornington Library and the community celebrate a pair who proved that a little love and a lot of patience can change lives. Thank you, Kenzie, Bill and Marilyn, for seven amazing years!
Quotes attributable to Mayor Councillor Anthony Marsh:
“From helping kids become confident readers to offering comfort during exam stress, Kenzie’s impact has been incredible. On behalf of the whole community, a huge thank you to Kenzie, Bill and Marilyn for all the love and patience you’ve shared over the past 7 years!”
