Tomorrow is International Women’s Day, and we’re reflecting on the strides made toward creating a more inclusive and equitable community on the Mornington Peninsula.

Through collaborative efforts and a commitment to progress, we’re proud to share the steps taken to promote equality and empower women across the Peninsula:

Support for community events

We supported local community organisations with initiatives promoting gender equality, such as the March Against Gender-Based Violence as part of the 16 Days of Activism and International Women’s Day events celebrating the achievements of local women.

Empowering women through sports

We created safer and more inclusive spaces for women and girls in sports and recreation by upgrading female-friendly sports facilities (Alexander Park, Red Hill Pavilions, Barber Reserve, and Mace Oval).

We also participated in the This Girl Can campaign and developed a Sports Club Management Policy and Fair Access Roadmap. The Shire also launched the Gender Inclusive Sports Club Toolkit to assist local sporting clubs in creating welcoming environments for women and girls.

Celebrating women in literature

Delivered library displays and events promoting and celebrating female authors and books that challenge gender stereotypes.

Women’s contributions to climate change and arts

Supported and provided opportunities for women to contribute to climate change solutions and arts and culture through programs such as the Energy Heroes Program and the Portrait of a Sea Wolf exhibition, showcasing large-scale photos of women from the Sea Wolves swimming community in Mt Martha.

This year, we’ve also launched the HERstory project – a celebration of women’s stories and their impact on our Peninsula. From public art displays to podcasts and workshops, this initiative aims to empower women and build stronger community ties.

These achievements reflect our commitment to the Gender Equality Strategy 2020–2030, which guides our efforts to break barriers and create opportunities for all.

We honour the women who came before us and pledge to march forward for a better tomorrow. Join us in celebrating their legacy and committing to the work ahead.
