Young leaders ready to take on new challenges
Published on 02 February 2022
The Youth Leadership Program coordinated by our Youth Services team took place at Camp Manyung in Mount Eliza in late January. 26 young people participated and walked away with new skills, new friends and a heap of memories.
Our young leaders (aged 12-25) came from all across the Peninsula and participated in several workshops and interactive activities which focused on:
- how to make a difference and influence people
- key elements of leadership
- how to set goals
- empathy
- communication skills
- public speaking.
Participants challenged themselves to move out of their comfort zone with activities in the afternoon sunshine, including the adrenaline-pumping ‘Giant Swing’. Teams work together to pull a rope and hoist their friend up approximately 15 metres to swing high up in the air.
The Youth Services team said: “it was so inspiring and wonderful to see such amazing young people make new friends, share their experiences and discuss why they want to be leaders.”
The program provides pathways into different leadership groups within Mornington Peninsula Shire Youth Service but also gives young people skills to use in their local groups, community or schools.
Quote attributable to Mayor Councillor Anthony Marsh:
“The Youth Leadership Program is an opportunity for local young people to develop confidence and leadership skills, social awareness and community connections. It provides meaningful opportunities to develop into young leaders within Mornington Peninsula communities and encourages participants to develop their leadership skills within different environments.
“We can't wait to see what these amazing young leaders will achieve in their communities in the future!”
The program is proudly sponsored by Bendigo Bank branches on the Mornington Peninsula.
