White Ribbon Day on the peninsula

Published on 14 November 2017

This White Ribbon Day (Saturday 25 November) Mornington Peninsula Shire invites you to show your support for the prevention of violence against women by participating in initiatives being held across the peninsula.

We are supporting the Respectful Relationships Committee’s White Ribbon Day March which will take place along High Street in Hastings from 11:30am – 1pm on Saturday 25 November.

The march, which forms part of Council’s approach to addressing family violence as outlined in our Prevention of Family Violence Implementation Plan 2015-18, will start at the corner of Alfred Street and High Street and finish with a free BBQ outside the Hastings library.

White Ribbon Day aims to raise awareness about the root causes of men’s violence against women through promoting gender equality.

In 2016/17, Victoria Police reported 1,984 family violence incidents on the peninsula as well as a 79 per cent increase in sexual offences.

Pleasingly, a recent VicHealth survey showed that 92.3 per cent of adults in our community would be willing to intervene in a situation of family violence.

This year, the White Ribbon Day theme is about equipping everyone with the knowledge and skills to help prevent violence against women, whilst keeping safe. To support this, White Ribbon have released a STOP Kit which encourages everyone to See, Talk, Offer support and Prevent.

From the 25 November to 10 December, look out for something a little different when you buy your take-away coffee.

To support 16 Days of Activism, some cafes and restaurants across the peninsula will be providing take-away cups with messages about how we can challenge gender stereotypes that contribute to the occurrence of violence against women.

The coffee cups will also have pictures on them created by kids from local schools across the region.

Show your support by sharing a photo of your coffee cup using #challengegenderstereotypes on your social media channels.
