Internationally renowned artist, sculptor and craftsman, Matthew Harding leaves an astounding legacy of art work.

In recent years much of Matthew’s work involved large scale projects with visitors able to enjoy his sculptures in public places across Australia and abroad.

Matthew completed nearly 40 works around the world and in 2017 alone, produced sculptures in Miami, Florida, Singapore, Victoria, Sydney, Canberra and Bathurst.

The peninsula has two remarkable examples of Matthew’s vision and workmanship in the Rosebud Gateway Sculptures - Sails and Helix Wave (2017). Using the reclaimed hard wood timber from the Rosebud pier refurbishment, Matthew created two innovative and impressive landmarks for the township, which will be enjoyed by the community for many years to come.

Many Shire officers worked closely with Matthew in recent times and are shocked and saddened by his passing.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Bryan Payne said “it’s with great sadness that we learn of Matthew’s passing.

“We are deeply touched by the loss of such a talented artist who provided a wonderful addition to our local landscape with his work on the Rosebud Gateway sculptures”.

Seawinds Ward Councillors Simon Brooks, Antonella Celi and Frank Martin said “'we so often take for granted the creative designs and works that surround us and enrich our lives every day - Matthew's amazing Rosebud Gateway sculptures are two such examples.

“To conceptualise such designs then physically wrangle them into being is a rare skill; and so often done at personal cost; physical, emotional and financial.

“These two sculptures will remain as a poignant reminder of Matthew's passion for creating significant works of public art that do indeed make a real difference. Our hearts go out to his family for their loss”.

Matthew is survived by his partner Freya and four young children.
