Shire’s age-friendly awards now open

Published on 12 April 2019

Nominations for Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Delys Sargeant Age-Friendly Awards are open.

The Awards recognise a local person, business, corporation or service that contributes to building a stronger local community for seniors who live, work or visit the Mornington Peninsula.

The awards aim to provide a public opportunity to recognise and value older people in the community; promote respect, reduce ageism, and encourage an age-friendly Mornington Peninsula. Community members, older people and their friends, families and carers can nominate persons or organisations who actively demonstrate attitudes and actions which encourage these values.

Categories open for nomination include:

  •  Mayor’s Senior Achiever Award
    • Elder of the year
    • Senior Achiever
  •  PACE Age-Friendly Community Award
    • Age-Friendly community service or program
    • Innovative club for older people
    • Encouraging Indigenous or Multicultural opportunities for older people
    • Age friendly local business
  • Promotion of Intergenerational Opportunities Award
    • Individuals or groups/businesses/services

Shire Mayor Councillor David Gill said the awards will continue to recognise and remember their namesake Delys who was a driving force behind creating better opportunities and support for older community members on the Peninsula.

“I encourage everyone to get involved by nominating an organisation or individual that is supporting our older people to remain healthy, active and independent across the Peninsula.

“Don’t forget the awards are also open to younger people, businesses and clubs – only a handful of categories are exclusively for older people aged over 50”.

Chair of the Shire’s Positive Ageing Steering Committee and Seawinds Ward Councillor Antonella Celi said “the awards are a great opportunity to celebrate the work being done by and for our senior community members and recognise their invaluable contribution to our local region”.

Nominations will be judged by a selection panel comprising representatives from the Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Positive Ageing Steering Committee and the Peninsula Advisory Committee for Elders (PACE).

Nominations close Tuesday 4 June 2019.
